Each model comes with a Levenhuk K50 Experiment kit. Experienced users will appreciate the highest quality of optics and produced views. Thanks to the combined illumination system, these microscopes are suitable for viewing transparent, opaque, and semi-transparent samples. Levenhuk Rainbow 50L microscopes have lightweight, yet reliable plastic bodies.

Compared to other series, Levenhuk Rainbow 50L microscopes offer a wider range of magnifications – there are six levels of increase: 40x, 80x, 100x, 200x, 400x, and 800x. Moreover, these microscopes come in reliable plastic cases for their safe storage and transportation.

Optics
Three objectives included in the kit provide 40x-400x magnification range. To set desired magnification, simply rotate the revolving nosepiece. To make the magnification range even wider, the kit includes a 2x Barlow lens, which doubles the magnification provided with any given objective. This gives us a great choice of available magnifications: 40x, 80x, 100x, 200x, 400x and 800x!

Quality glass optics produce clear images without distortions. To improve optics light transmission, the lenses are covered with multilayer coating.

Double illumination
All microscopes in the Levenhuk Rainbow 50L series are equipped with two LED illumination systems. The lower illumination allows for observations in transmitted light; for example, you can observe microorganisms in a drop of aquarium water or study the cellular structure of an onion peel. The upper illumination makes it possible to work with opaque objects – among other interesting things, you can see the inner structure of different kinds of paper and fabrics. In order to observe semi-transparent samples, both illuminations need to be turned on. A smooth brightness adjustment mechanism makes it easy to set the best level of illumination required for each particular sample.

Thanks to its double illumination system, the microscope is suitable for working with a wide range of diverse samples. Lower illumination is used for observing transparent samples such as thin slices of plants, pet fur, and salt and sugar crystals. Upper illumination is required for working with opaque samples, for example, fabrics or paper. If you need to observe a semi-transparent sample, turn on both illuminations. The convenient brightness adjustment mechanism allows you to easily set just the right level of illumination.

User-friendly design
The microscope comes in a durable and lightweight plastic body. To provide you with the most comfortable observations, the microscope head is inclined at 45° and can be rotated 360° around its axis. That is extremely convenient when working in a group – you don’t have to move the instrument; just turn the head in the desired direction. The microscope can be powered by either an electrical outlet or batteries.

The body is made of sturdy plastic, so the microscope is both durable and lightweight. To prevent fatigue during long studies, the head is inclined at 45°. During group observations the head can be easily rotated 360° around its axis. The microscope can be used both indoors and outdoors as it can be powered by an outlet as well as by batteries.

Levenhuk K50 Experiment Kit
The microscope comes with Levenhuk K50 Experiment Kit that includes everything a beginning biologist might need. With this kit, a young explorer can start his or her observations right away – ready-to-use microscope slides are supplied with the kit. It’s also possible to create new microscope slides with provided instruments, observe Artemia and carry out a number of interesting experiments. The user guide included in the kit will help with all of this in a fun, entertaining manner.

Looking for something to start your observations with?

Paramecium caudatum is perhaps one of the first protozoans that a young naturalist would explore. These organisms live in fresh standing water. They can also be found in an aquarium, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned for a long time. My ciliate-shoes were taken from the aquarium. Of course, there are only a few ciliate-shoes in aquarium water – the possibility of finding one of them in your microscope’s eyepiece is extremely low. Therefore, we need to increase their concentration. To do so, take a jar (about 17 fluid ounces or 0.5 liters), fill it with aquarium water, put a small spoiled onion and banana peel inside. Put the jar in a warm dark place for 5 to 7 days (don’t close it with a lid).

Paramecium caudatum. Animation. Magnification: 64x.

The average size of Paramecium caudatum is 0.02 inches (0.5 mm). For locomotion Paramecium caudatum uses its cilia (about 15 thousand cilia cover its little body!). Moreover, it has two nuclei (a large macronucleus is responsible for nutrition, respiration, metabolism, etc.; and a small micronucleus – for reproduction). Paramecium caudatum feeds on bacteria or algae. The food is caught by an oral groove covered in cilia and then goes to the cell mouth. It is then digested in the digestive vacuole (gullet). Undigested leftovers are ‘thrown out in the open’ through an anal pore (cytoproct). To remove all excess water, our heroine has two contractile vacuoles. They work like pumps on a boat, pumping excess water out of its body. Paramecium caudatum maintains its slipper-like shape thanks to a special membrane (pellicle).
