Unboxing the Levenhuk LabZZ M101 Microscope:
Levenhuk LabZZ M101 Moonstone Microscope
Stylish, modern, and convenient microscope for young researchers. Magnification: 40–640x.
Modern microscope Levenhuk LabZZ M101 Moonstone will help young researchers learn many new things about the world around them. This microscope allows for observing microscopic aquatic crustaceans, and exploring insects, plants and their internal structure. The kit includes everything for first biological experiments – your kid won’t ever get bored. This microscope looks very unusual – thanks to its original translucent body it would become an ideal gift!
Optics
The microscope is designed especially for children, but, in terms of its optical performance, this model is in no way inferior to many ‘adult’ microscopes. The instrument is equipped with three objective lenses. To change the magnification, you don’t have to pause your work – you can quickly switch objectives using the revolving nosepiece. The unique feature of this model is its sliding two-position eyepiece, which replaces two eyepieces with an increase of 10 and 16-fold–and it is really easy to use. Your kid won’t need to change eyepieces; therefore they won’t get lost. Three objectives and this eyepiece allow you to obtain the following magnification levels: 40x, 64x, 100x, 160x, 400x and 640x.
The difference between this microscope and other children microscope models is its exceptionally quality optics. The microscope comes with three objectives: 4x, 10x, 40x. To switch the objective lens, simply turn the revolving nosepiece. One other unique feature – a sliding two-position eyepiece with 10x and 16x magnifications. It is very convenient to use such an eyepiece. The microscope provides a wide magnification range from 40 to 640x.
Studying microscope samples
To observe a fly's wing or onion cells, a thin transparent sample should be placed on the round stage. Convenient clips will securely hold it in place - you won't lose it out of sight after a careless movement. The light emitted from LED diodes (located below the stage) passes through the sample, creating the magnified image. The adjustable brightness is a very convenient feature – you can make the illumination more intensive for thick and less transparent samples, and do otherwise when observing very thin and very transparent sections.
The microscope is designed for observing transparent objects. To observe a mosquito’s wing or a thing slice of indoor plant, the specimen should be placed on the round stage. Two clips securely fix the sample in place – it won’t get out of view even if the kid accidently pushes the instrument. The illumination source is located below the stage.
The light passes through the sample, forming a magnified image in the eyepiece. The brightness is adjustable.
Comfortable and safe design and power supply
The body is made of durable plastic – the microscope is both lightweight and reliable. To avoid any inconvenience during observations, the head is inclined at 45 degrees. The microscope runs on batteries – it is safe and convenient.
Interesting experiments in the Experiment kit
The kit contains an experiment kit that includes everything needed for conducting exciting experiments at home! The informative user guide will tell your kid how the microscope works, what he or she can do with it, how to make microscope samples and breed microscopic crustaceans at home, and many other interesting things!

Paramecium caudatum is perhaps one of the first protozoans that a young naturalist would explore. These organisms live in fresh standing water. They can also be found in an aquarium, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned for a long time. My ciliate-shoes were taken from the aquarium. Of course, there are only a few ciliate-shoes in aquarium water – the possibility of finding one of them in your microscope’s eyepiece is extremely low. Therefore, we need to increase their concentration. To do so, take a jar (about 17 fluid ounces or 0.5 liters), fill it with aquarium water, put a small spoiled onion and banana peel inside. Put the jar in a warm dark place for 5 to 7 days (don’t close it with a lid).
Paramecium caudatum. Animation. Magnification: 64x.
The average size of Paramecium caudatum is 0.02 inches (0.5 mm). For locomotion Paramecium caudatum uses its cilia (about 15 thousand cilia cover its little body!). Moreover, it has two nuclei (a large macronucleus is responsible for nutrition, respiration, metabolism, etc.; and a small micronucleus – for reproduction). Paramecium caudatum feeds on bacteria or algae. The food is caught by an oral groove covered in cilia and then goes to the cell mouth. It is then digested in the digestive vacuole (gullet). Undigested leftovers are ‘thrown out in the open’ through an anal pore (cytoproct). To remove all excess water, our heroine has two contractile vacuoles. They work like pumps on a boat, pumping excess water out of its body. Paramecium caudatum maintains its slipper-like shape thanks to a special membrane (pellicle).
